Discover Zen and Yoga in Kyoto: A Private Mindfulness Experience at Myoshinji Temple

Find Stillness in the Heart of Kyoto
If you’re visiting Kyoto and looking for a truly authentic spiritual experience, a Zen and Yoga private session at Myoshinji Temple offers the perfect opportunity to slow down, reconnect, and rediscover peace of mind.
Recently, a wonderful guest from the United States joined this unique session to explore Zen philosophy and mindfulness through yoga.

Learning the Way of Zen: Living in the Present Moment
In our modern lives, it’s easy to worry about the future or dwell on the past. Many guests join this session because they wish to learn how to live in the “present moment” — a key teaching of Zen.
The session began with a short introduction to the history of Myoshinji Temple, followed by a discussion about the fundamental principles of Zen.
We explored four daily practices that help embody Zen in everyday life:
- Practicing Zazen (seated meditation)
- Learning Zen riddles and dialogues (Koan)
- Understanding Zen phrases and teachings
- Keeping the surroundings clean — the practice of mindfulness through cleaning

Meditation and the Power of Breathing
Our guest was especially interested in how to stay focused during meditation without being overwhelmed by thoughts.
The key lies in the breath.
By observing the rise and fall of your belly and chest, or counting each breath, your mind becomes naturally anchored in the present moment.
This simple yet profound practice allows you to let go of unnecessary thoughts and experience a sense of calm clarity — what Zen calls being here and now.

The Heart of Zen: Freedom from Suffering
At its core, Zen is about finding freedom from suffering through awareness of the present.
When we breathe consciously, feel nature around us, and share each moment fully with others, we begin to experience true mindfulness.
This is where both Zen and Yoga beautifully meet — in the quiet awareness of “now.”

Guest’s Reflection
”Great experience! Agasa was an amazing instructor- kind, thoughtful, gracious, and informative.
I learned a lot. It was a real special atmosphere overlooking a garden in a quiet private temple on the grounds of the larger temple complex. I would highly recommend to anyone looking for exposure to Zen and Yoga while in Japan. Thank you Agasa!”
